Wine Country fires: What we know, and what we don’t

Fourteen wildfires in the North Bay and surrounding region ravaged mountainsides, homes, vineyards and farmland beginning Sunday night. Major highways were shut down, and local officials requested help from around the region as Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency. Information from authorities and residents on the ground was developing throughout Monday. Officials said efforts were focused on saving people’s lives, so many details were not fully known.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein issued the warning in a speech in Annapolis, Md., saying that negotiating with technology companies hasn't worked. From a report: US researchers measured the black carbon found on 1,300 larks, woodpeckers and sparrows over the past century. They've produced the most complete picture to date of historic air quality over industrial parts of the US. The study also boosts our understanding of historic climate change.
