Thousands evacuated as flames bore down on North Bay homes

Startled awake by sheriff’s deputies banging on their doors, hundreds of people grabbed whatever property they could that was within reach and evacuated from homes, hotels and resorts as fires seemed to rage everywhere they looked in the Wine Country. Like many other evacuees, Bernie Consten, 75, ended up at the CrossWalk Community Church on First Street in downtown Napa, which was quickly converted into a shelter. Consten a resident of the Country Inn retirement community in Napa said he and 17 to 18 neighbors were ordered to leave their homes and get in to vans, which took them to the shelter. Residents at the Celebrity Haven assistant living facility in Napa were also evacuated.

From a report: US researchers measured the black carbon found on 1,300 larks, woodpeckers and sparrows over the past century. They've produced the most complete picture to date of historic air quality over industrial parts of the US. The study also boosts our understanding of historic climate change.
