Smoke from fires makes air unhealthy around region

Smoke from destructive wildfires burning in the North Bay has made the air hazardous near the burn areas and unhealthy all around the Bay Area, air quality monitors said Tuesday. People in the fire-affected regions of Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino counties may be overwhelmed amid the disorder, but officials nevertheless said residents shouldn’t shrug off protecting their respiratory health. “If you have masks available, you should use them,” said Kristine Roselius, a spokeswoman for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. Better yet, she said, “If you can, stay indoors with all the windows and doors closed.

From a report: US researchers measured the black carbon found on 1,300 larks, woodpeckers and sparrows over the past century. They've produced the most complete picture to date of historic air quality over industrial parts of the US. The study also boosts our understanding of historic climate change.
