50-mph gusts whipped wildfires across Wine Country

Heavy sustained wind and gusts of up to 50 mph in valleys and 70 mph on mountaintops whipped through the North Bay Sunday night and early Monday morning, sending the flames of multiple wildfires blistering across Sonoma and Mendocino counties and heavy smoke pouring into Bay Area cities.

From a report: US researchers measured the black carbon found on 1,300 larks, woodpeckers and sparrows over the past century. They've produced the most complete picture to date of historic air quality over industrial parts of the US. The study also boosts our understanding of historic climate change.
